National 25 mile Record for Ken Platts

Cambridge Cycling Club rider Ken Platts made history on Saturday by becoming the first ever rider over 60 years of age to beat 50 minutes for a 25 mile time trial. Platts, riding in the API Zak Carr Memorial Time Trial, recorded a time of 49 minutes 57 seconds, an average speed just in excess of 30mph. Not only did this set a National age-related record, but also established a new Cambridge Club Senior record.

The 25 mile Time Trial has been the backbone event of British cycling, and the National records have always aroused great interest. The 50 minute barrier (30mph) was first breached in 1978, by Alf Engers, but it was 13 years later before a rider over 40 years of age got inside 50 minutes. It took until 2002 before the barrier was beaten by a 50 year old rider, when Steve China achieved 49-57. Platts, aged 60, has now recorded an identical time, raising the standard to an unprecedented new level.

Platts, the current British Veterans Best All Rounder, was delighted with his ride. He commented, ”…..it gets harder as you get older to maintain a high speed over the shorter distances, but I knew that after retaining the Cambridge 25 mile title a month ago, I had good form. To be the first ever 60 year old to exceed 30 mph for 25 miles is something special.”
