Roadmen, Testers and Randonneurs combined forces to make Cambridge Cycling Club the top performing cycling club at this years interdisciplinary Eastern Counties Cycling Association Festival. Over sixty clubs from across the Eastern counties and North London are eligible to compete in the festival.
This was the 32nd running of this unique event. The E.C.C.A. Festival includes several time trials, circuit races, road races, a map reading competition and Audax rides. E.C.C.A. member clubs score points for their performances in all these events. The festival serves to bring a variety of interest groups within clubs together in a celebration of cycling with a healthy dose of competitive spirit.
This is the first year Cambridge CC has won the club championship, and probably the first year the club has really targeted the event. Our effort was largely led by Digby & Katie Symons, who rode 8 events between them over the 3 days of the festival; 2 Tandem Time Trials, the Map Reading competition (which they won!), 2 solo time trials, 2 circuit races and one half of the 2-man Team Time Trial. Also worthy of a hearty mention in dispatches is club hard-man Douglas Bradshaw, whose outstanding performances included victory in 2 solo time trials and the 2-up Team Time Trial, and 2nd place in another solo time trial. Another club star was Owen Lake who won the Junior circuit race at Hog Hill , with support from Chris Hughes. Steve Hubbard finished 2nd overall in the 3/4 road race, and Andy Cockburn 2nd overall (+ 1st ECCA rider) in the 3/4 circuit race at Hog Hill.
Eastern clubs East London Velo, A.P.I. Metrow and Essex Roads gave Cambridge a healthy run for the title, and it wasn’t until the 2nd day of the festival that we started to pull clear on cumulative points.
